By the early 1970s, Elton John and his longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin had become one of the most successful songwriting partnerships in the world. At the time, they were working under DJM Records, a system that prioritized output and profit above everything else. Albums were expected on a strict schedule. Touring demands were constant.
